Yesterday (17 january 2016) was in some way a special day for music lovers, quite a few of them being regulars of this blog. As it is, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopedia was planning to go to South, where he stayed at Hosur. Taking advantage of his presence there, a meeting of likeminded music lovers was organised in Bangalore. The lead in organising this meet was taken by Gajendra Khanna who decided to hold this meet in his residence. as it is, he is holding musical meets in his residence regularly and so he was quite an old hand in such matters.
He announced in a few facebook groups that he would be arranging to have it broadcast live. Now, those of us who are used to watching live telecast of last few decades know that arranging live telecast was very much a rocket science in olden days. When we opened the given youtube link at the appointed time (11 AM), we found that the telecast was actually working ! So this proved to us that Gajendra Khanna must be a rocket scientist ! :)
I requested participants to file their own reports on the meet after the meeting. In the meanwhile I thought that I too needed to practice what I was preaching. :) So here is my report on the meet, from a spectator point of view of view.
Avinash Scrapwala was the first to log on to the telecast and he wondered why he was not getting the audio. I did not do any such wondering. The fact that the telecast was working without a glitch was in itself a marvellous achievement, as far as I was concerned. I felt like those late 18th century people who were quite thrilled when they first watched moving pictures which were without sounds.
The initial camera angle was such that I was able to make out Raja, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh and Mr K Satish Shenoy. The person seated on the right of Raja (who I lated found out was Mr N R Prasad) was animatedly discussing Dev Anand.
There were a few more people whom I was unable to identify at that time. It turned out that Gajendra Khanna was hidden behind Mr Shenoy.
Later, when the camera angle was changed, we found out that Peevesie’s mom was also there in the meet. Initially she was busy posting updated of the meet in the whatsapp group, but later she may have become busy in the meeting, seeing that her whatsapp messages dried up.
I found Srinivas Ganti, Laxmi Priya, Pradeep Raghunathan, Khyati Bhatt etc also logging in at different times and they all searched for sound. Not finding any, they went away. :)
My internet held firm throughout the five hours long streaming of the meeting and I was logged on throughout. My dedication began to pay off after two hours when sound too began to be heard. So the live streaming entered the talkie era from the silent era in a matter of two hours. It was then that we were able to follow what was being discussed. We found our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh holding forth on the career of C Ramchandra. Later he held forth on topics like famous artists dying unsung, wives of V Shantaram etc.
Gajendra Khanna, the host and the technical expert behind the live streaming, kept shifting the camera (which basically was the laptop :) ) at different angles and distances from the participants. So sometimes we got long shots, sometimes zoom shots, sometimes bird’s eye view, sometimes fly in the wall eye view etc. :)
Though I had seen the photographs of Mr Deshmukh, I got to hear his voice for the first time. I found him looking a bit like G R Vishwanath, my favourite cricketer from my growing up days.
I have heard the voice of Raja before, but it may be for the first time that I noticed that his voice is a bit like Ameen Sayani. :)
I have heard the voice of Peevesie’s mom quite a few times since she has talked with me on phone a few times so there were no surprises there.
The other music lovers in the meet were less well known to me. But it is clear that they follow the blog or at least they follow the writeups of Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh. When it was time to bid adieu, a few of them enquired how old Mr Deshmukh was. Our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia told them that his grandchildren are in medical colleges etc and so he himself is a grandfather in his 70s. very candidly told them not to be misled by the colour of his hair. He hurried on to add that his hair are real of course. :)
It must have been five hours well spent for the various musical birds of the same feather that gathered together. Personally I quite enjoyed watching this live telecast. I sincerely thank Gajendra Khanna for making all this happen. The fact that the live streaming worked flawlessly and it in fact improved (with audio also working subsequently) was a testimony to his expertise in making the most of Internet technologies for the better good of music lovers. :)
This live streaming was getting recorded as well and now it is available for watching too here.
The report from the participants themselves will hopefully arrive in a few days time. So for the time being here is my report on the meet. :)
The song on the occasion is from “Dilruba”(1950). This is the ninth song(out of 11 songs) from the movie to appear in the blog. The song expresses the joyous feeling of expectancy of a lady who is hoping to meet her beloved later on the day, much like how the paricipants to the meet may have felt before meeting each other. :)
Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Gyan Dutt.
Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisaton of this song. My own guess is that this song may have been picturised on Rehana.
Now two more songs from this movie are left to be discussed. These songs are not available on YT. Have no worry. These songs are very much there with me. So this movie will get YIPPEED in the blog soon. That is a promise. :)
I just noticed that this song is the 700th song of Rajinder Krishan is the blog as a lyricist. He becomes the second lyricist (after Majrooh Sultanpuri) to touch this mark in the blog.
